National Seaweed Engineering and Technological Research Center

The national Seaweed Engineering and Technological Research Center was approved by the Ministry of Science & Technology and set up in 2007, and merged with Shandong Oriental Ocean Sci-Tech Co., Ltd. The Center, taking the goal of breeding improved seaweed seeds, healthy seedling, and seaweed high-value utilization, will be built into an internationally influential engineering and technological research center in the domestic first-class level, integrating seaweed technology research, result transformation, product development, introduction & absorption, and technical training as a whole to promote the seaweed technology upgrades.

After the completion, the Center will be equipped with the international advanced facilities, and set up 5 laboratories of ocean biological laboratory, large seaweed laboratory, micro-algae laboratory, comprehensive seaweed development & research laboratory, and analytical laboratory, as well as 3 demonstration bases of seaweed breeding, cultivation, and comprehensive processing. The seaweed breeding base covers an area of 9,136m2, the facility & cultivation base of 800 mu, and the comprehensive processing base of 2,000m2.

Since its establishment, the Center has invested more than RMB 10 million to complete the construction of ocean biological laboratory, large seaweed laboratory, and 3 demonstration bases. In the ways of independent training, training by entrustment, and introduction & recruitment, the center newly adds 9 research staff with Master's degree, and hires 12 research personnel with Doctoral degrees from other institutes.


Coastal Zone Living Marine Resource Laboratory

Coastal Zone Living Marine Resource Laboratory is a joint R&D center and test base co-built by Shandong Oriental Ocean Sci-Tech Co., Ltd. and Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research for Sustainable Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences to commit to the sustainable development of resources and environment in coastal zone and the development of living marine resources with high added values. It closely combines scientific research and production, by means of complementing each other’s advantages, resources sharing, and collaborative innovation to accelerate the transformation and industrialization of scientific and technological achievements.

The laboratory boasts 10 full-time researchers and 6 research staff with a doctor’s degree. And it is outfit with the existing equipment worth RMB 3,000,000, mainly including: JASCO FT-IR type infrared spectrometers, 600M NMR spectrometers with superconducting magnet, JASCO high performance liquid chromatographs, elemental analyzers, BIOF-6000 fermentation systems, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometers, table-type high-speed refrigerated centrifuges, table-type freeze driers, -86℃ ultra low temperature freezers, illumination incubators, biological microscopes, anatomical lenses, table concentrators, PCR instruments, polarimeters, vapor-bathing constant temperature vibrators, and high-resolution gas chromatography mass spectrograph.


National Aquatic Product Seed Multiplication Farm


The aquatic product seed multiplication farm, as the earliest Chinese kelp breeding field, was accepted by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1999 and named the national aquatic product seed multiplication farm.

The farm now possesses scientific research and production facilities for seed preservation, breeding, and cultivation. Covering an area of 3,000m2, the scientific research building sets up the kelp germplasm preservation, identification and breeding center and such laboratories as a low-temperature cultivation laboratory, a clone amplification cultivation laboratory, a constant-temperature seed production laboratory, a molecular biology laboratory, an asepsis cultivation laboratory, a superfreeze laboratory, and a biochemical analysis laboratory, and is assorted with 62 advanced instruments. The kelp phytotrone covers 9,000m2, the comprehensive phytotrone, 5,000m2, and sea cucumber intensive culture field, 250mu. And the offshore experimental base is located in Yunxi Village, Jianggezhuang Town, Muping District, Yantai. Now the farm has formed the production system of germplasm preservation, breed of variety, and seed breeding on the basis of gametophyte clone technology. It has the first-class kelp germplasm bank and collects and preserves more than 6,000 female gametophyte clones of 49 varieties at home and abroad.

The independently developed “901 kelp new variety breeding” won the first prize of science and technology progress award of the Ministry of Agriculture and the second prize of national science and technology progress award, and the latter prize is scarcely won in the aquatic product industry in the recent ten years. “Oriental No. 2” kelp won the first prize of Shandong province science and technology progress award, “Oriental No. 3” kelp obtained one of the 10 prizes for the achievements in science and technology in Yantai, and the major research project “R&D of kelp gametophyte cloning seed production technology” of Shandong Scientific and Technological Commission undertaken jointly with China Ocean University won first prize of innovation achievements of National Bureau of Oceanography. The independently developed “901”, “Oriental No. 2”, and “Oriental No. 3” kelps passed the variety certification respectively in 1996, in 2005, and in 2008 by the National Registration Commission of Aquatic Stock Seed and Improved Seed, were announced to be appropriate for generalizing in the whole country, and were the 3 ones of the 4 new kelp varieties approved.

All the main breeding varieties of the farm obtained the pollution-free origin of place and product authentications. It can reach the annual capacity of 1.25 billion improved kelps, sea cucumber of 50,000 jin (25,000 kg), and sea cucumber commodities of 40 tons.
